School Safety

Every student and every School District staff member deserves a safe learning and working environment.

CB Team leadership and supporters have long been proponents of proactive measures to ensure that all students, teachers and school staff are afforded a supportive and safe learning and working environment.

The following elements are essential to preventing violence in schools: Social skills and bullying-prevention programs that are designed and implemented with the support of school staff, the student body and all other stakeholders; Partnerships with service agencies that can support the needs of students in a coordinated manner; High-quality alternative placements for chronically disruptive and violent students; Detailed school safety plans; High standards for safe buildings; and Schoolwide systems of rules and behavioral expectations that are communicated and implemented in a firm, fair and consistent manner.

“Student’s learning environment is our working environment.  They cannot be separated,” Jerry Jordan.

Politics

“Bad politicians are elected by good citizens who don’t vote.”

  1. It is an old, somewhat simple and contrived, phrase yet it remains central to answering why organizations such as ours seek to have the greatest possible impact on government and elections.
  2. Governments, most often by the actions of elected politicians, make decisions that impact our professions, our students, their parents and our communities almost every day.
  3. More so now than ever, politics and politicians cast their shadow over every aspect of public life including the public schools.
  4. The old political patronage system by which ward leaders promised political support in exchange for some reward has been eclipsed by a more democratic system of greater participation by active and knowledgeable citizens.  But, money now corrupts that system.
  5. Organizations and causes that can’t match the cash donated by the rich interests to politicians who need to fund their election campaigns substitute involvement by their members to impact election outcomes.
  6. As with unions themselves, the voices of the many speaking as one have a greater impact than any individual can have.  Politics is a negotiation too.
  7. An old-time labor leader may have said it best 100 years ago, “Punish your enemies and reward your friends.”
  8. Voting for our interests, educating others to the soundness of those ideals and supporting candidates who share those ideals is the politics of our time.
  9. By uniting our voices and joining together around shared values and common goals, we will put the public back in public education. We will help our public schools become centers of their communities, secure a voice and respect for those closest to the classroom, and fulfill public education’s purpose as a propeller of our economy, an anchor of democracy, and a gateway to racial, social and economic justice.
